Learn more about how to measure image features in Photoshop and understand what each data point records in the Measurement Log.

When you measure an image in Photoshop, the data points you select determine the values recorded in the Measurement Log. Each data point corresponds to the measurement tool you use.

Heading

Angle

Records the angle of orientation (±0-180) defined by the Ruler tool.

Area

Records the area of the selection in square pixels, or in calibrated units according to the current measurement scale (for example, square millimeters).

Circularity

Records the shape factor using the formula 4π × (Area ÷ Perimeter²). A value of 1.0 indicates a perfect circle, while values closer to 0.0 indicate elongated polygons. May not be valid for very small selections.

Count

Records the count value based on the active tool: number of discontinuous selection areas, number of counted items (Count tool), or number of ruler lines (Ruler tool).

Date and Time

Records the date and time stamp of when the measurement occurred.

Document

Records the name of the document (file) measured.

Gray Value

Records brightness values of the selection. Values range from 0–255 (8-bit), 0–32,768 (16-bit), or 0.0–10 (32-bit). Photoshop converts the image internally to grayscale and calculates mean, median, minimum, and maximum values.

Height

Records the height of the selection (max y – min y), based on the current measurement scale.

Histogram

Records histogram data for each channel (RGB, CMYK, etc.). Data is exported as CSV files when saving the Measurement Log. For multiple selections, one histogram file is generated for the total selection and additional files for each separate selection.

Integrated Density

Records the sum of all pixel values in the selection. Equivalent to Area (in pixels) × Mean Gray Value.

Label

Records a unique identifier for each measurement (for example, Measurement 1, Measurement 2). For multiple selections, assigns an additional Feature label and number.

Length

Records the linear distance defined by the Ruler tool, based on the current measurement scale.

Perimeter

Records the perimeter of the selection. For multiple selections, one perimeter is recorded for the total selection and additional values for each separate selection.

Scale

Records the measurement scale of the source document (for example, 100 px = 3 miles).

Scale Units

Records the logical units of the measurement scale (for example, pixels, millimeters).

Scale Factor

Records the number of pixels assigned to each scale unit.

Source

Records the measurement source: Ruler tool, Count tool, or Selection.

Width

Records the width of the selection (max x – min x), based on the current measurement scale.
