Display or hide layer styles

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to control the visibility of layer styles in Adobe Photoshop to simplify your workspace when working with complex designs.

Layer styles appear as expandable items beneath their parent layer in the Layers panel. Showing or hiding these styles affects only their visibility in the Layers panel—not their appearance in your document. This can be particularly helpful when working with complex documents containing many layers with effects.

Select a layer with styles applied in the Layers panel. You can identify these layers by the Add a layer style icon.

Select the small triangle near the layer name to show or hide the layer styles.

Select the panel menu   icon > Panel Options and select your preferred thumbnail size.
