Learn how to save your work in Adobe Photoshop, choose from multiple file formats, and store it locally or in the cloud.

Select File > Save.

Select Save in the Save As dialog box.
Your document is saved in its current format and location, preserving all layers and settings.

Save a document with a new name, location, or format

Select File > Save As.

Enter the file name, select the format, and location (local or Creative Cloud) in the Save As dialog box.

Select additional options as needed:
Notes: Include text notes saved with the Photoshop file.

Alpha Channels: Preserve extra channels used for masks or selections.

Spot Colors: Retain custom spot colors for printing.

Layers: Keep all layers instead of flattening the file.

Color: Embed a color profile to maintain a consistent appearance across devices.

Select Save.
A dialog box with additional options may appear depending on the selected format.

Tip

You can change the default save location to your computer or Creative Cloud. Select Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling (macOS), then choose your preferred option under Default File Location and select OK.

The Preferences dialog box is open and the File Handling panel is displayed with options to set file saving behaviors, recovery intervals, default file locations, and compatibility settings.
Configure file saving preferences to manage how Photoshop saves and recovers files.

Save a copy while preserving your original document

Select File > Save a Copy.

The copy is saved while your original document remains open and unchanged. Depending on the selected format, a dialog box with additional options may appear.

To prevent Photoshop from adding the word copy to filenames, select Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling (macOS). Then, choose Do not append "copy" to filename when saving a copy on both macOS and Windows. If there's a risk of overwriting the original file, you'll receive a warning.

The Save a Copy workflow lets you create a new version, such as a flattened JPEG or PNG, without altering the original.

Create temporary versions without saving to disk

To temporarily store a version of your image in memory:

  • Select Window > History to create a snapshot and temporarily store a version of your image.
  • Select Image > Duplicate to create a copy of the image in memory without saving it to your hard disk.

Use a snapshot for quick, temporary backups and a duplicate when you need a separate version for detailed edits.
