Convert embedded Smart Objects to linked

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to make Smart Objects reference external files in Adobe Photoshop without losing existing transformations, filters, or effects.

Smart Objects protect the original image from damage caused by editing. Changing an embedded Smart Object to a linked file preserves your edits, lowers file size, and makes it easier to share, reuse, and update across projects or with collaborators.

Select the embedded Smart Object layer to convert in the Photoshop Layers panel.

Right-click the layer and select Convert to Linked.

Smart Object layer is selected in the Layers panel, where the option Convert to Linked is highlighted in the context menu.
Identify and select the Smart Object layer you want to convert.

Select a location on your computer to save the source file.

Enter a file name and include a supported extension, such as JPG or PSD.

Select Save.

Photoshop creates a separate source file and links it to your document. The Smart Object layer shows a linkicon in the Layers panel, confirming the conversion.
