Soften hard edges or reduce detail with the blur tool

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to use the Blur tool in Adobe Photoshop to soften edges or reduce detail in selected parts of an image.

Select the Blur tool from the Tools panel.

In the Options bar, set up your tool:

  • Select Toggle Brush Settings panel Brush Settings to adjust the brush Size and Hardness.
  • Drag the Strength slider to control the blur effect, 10–30% for subtle softening, 50% or higher for stronger blur.
  • Select Sample All Layers if you want to blur based on all visible layers, or leave it unchecked to affect only the active layer.

Drag across the areas you want to blur, intensifying the effect with each stroke.

If you blur too much, press Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Command+Z (macOS) to undo your last stroke.

Tip

For natural results in portraits, use a low Strength setting, around 10–20% and build up gradually to keep skin texture intact.
