Last updated on Oct 27, 2026

Organize tools and create custom toolbar layouts to match your design workflow.

Customize Illustrator toolbars by adding or removing tools, grouping tools, controlling which controls are visible, and creating custom toolbars.

Use a toolbar optimized for your design needs.

Toolbar customization is available when the All Tools drawer is open. You can modify any toolbar type (Getting Started, Basic, or Advanced) by adding tools from the drawer, removing tools you don't use, or creating new toolbars from scratch. Custom toolbars remain available in the workspace where you created them and reopen automatically when you return to that workspace.

  • Install Illustrator on macOS or Windows.
  • Open a document.

Add or remove individual tools

Select Edit Toolbar at the bottom of the toolbar to open the All Tools drawer.

Drag a tool from the All Tools drawer and drop it between existing tools.

Drag the tool back into the All Tools drawer.

To restore the toolbar to its original configuration, select the flyout menu icon in the drawer and choose Reset.

Add multiple tools as a group

Select Edit Toolbar.

Hold Shift and click each tool you want to include, or use Ctrl-click (Windows) or Command-click (macOS) to select multiple tools from different categories.

Drag the selection and drop it at a divider line between tools in the toolbar.

Note

Installed third-party tools appear automatically in the toolbar. In custom toolbars, they're available from their corresponding drawers.

The first selected tool becomes the group's icon.

Show or hide toolbar controls

Open the All Tools drawer.

Scroll to the Show section at the bottom of the drawer.

Select a control to show or hide it.

Create a new toolbar

Select Window > Toolbars > New Toolbar, or open any toolbar's All Tools drawer and choose New Toolbar from the flyout menu.

Enter a name for your toolbar and select OK.

Select Edit Toolbar on the new blank toolbar to open its drawer.

Drag tools from the drawer into the toolbar to build your custom layout.

Manage existing toolbars

Select Window > Toolbars > Manage Toolbars, or choose Manage Toolbars from any toolbar drawer's flyout menu.

In the Manage Toolbars dialog, select a toolbar name from the list and choose an action: To rename, type a new name in the text field. To duplicate, select the + button. To delete, select the Delete button.

Select OK.

Note

Illustrator saves custom toolbars with the workspace where you created them.
