Fix Illustrator crashes caused by third-party software

Last updated on Oct 30, 2026

Learn how to fix 'Adobe Illustrator has stopped working' errors when launching, opening, or saving files due to antivirus or other third-party software conflicts.

Illustrator may crash during launch or when opening or saving files if third-party software on your system conflicts with the application. You'll see error messages like "Adobe Illustrator has stopped working," or the application will close without warning.

Update Hancom Office (Windows)

Outdated versions of Hancom Office on Windows conflict with Illustrator's file operations.

Select Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Right-click Hancom Office and select Uninstall.

Download the latest version from the Hancom Office website.

Install the updated version and restart your computer.

Launch Illustrator and test file operations.

Configure antivirus exclusions

If the crash persists, add Illustrator to your antivirus software's exclusion list:

Open your antivirus settings.

Add the Illustrator installation folder to the exclusion list.

Restart your computer and launch Illustrator.

Note

The default Illustrator installation path is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator on Windows and /Applications/Adobe Illustrator on macOS.

Disable conflicting system utilities

System utilities like clipboard managers, color calibration tools, or monitoring software can interfere with Illustrator:

Identify recently installed system utilities.

Quit these applications from the system tray.

Launch Illustrator and test stability.

If Illustrator runs without crashing, the conflict is confirmed. Contact the software vendor for compatible updates or uninstall the utility.
