PDF/X standards, compatibility, and general options

Last updated on Oct 25, 2026

Learn about PDF/X standards, PDF compatibility levels, and General panel options in the Save Adobe PDF dialog box in Adobe Illustrator.

Use this reference when you're preparing files for professional print workflows, archiving working files, or configuring export settings in the Save Adobe PDF dialog box.

Review PDF/X standards

PDF/X standards are ISO specifications for exchanging print-ready graphic content. They eliminate common printing problems related to color, fonts, and trapping. Select a PDF/X standard in the Save Adobe PDF dialog box when your print service provider requires it, or when you're preparing files for commercial printing.

  • PDF/X-1a (2001 and 2003): Provides maximum compatibility for print production workflows. Files include metadata describing the intended printing condition and require a specific output intent profile.
  • PDF/X-3 (2002 and 2003): Extends PDF/X-1a to support color-managed workflows.
  • PDF/X-4 (2008): Preserves live transparency as editable content and supports current color management features, making it a common choice for workflows that need more flexibility.

Select PDF compatibility levels

The Compatibility setting in the Save Adobe PDF dialog box determines which PDF version Illustrator creates. Select a compatibility level based on how you'll distribute the file. Newer versions support more features, but older PDF readers may not open them or may open them with reduced functionality.

In general, use the most recent version unless you need backward compatibility with readers using older versions of Acrobat or Reader. Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4) or later preserves live transparency without flattening. For layer preservation or extended color space support, use Acrobat 6.0 (PDF 1.5) or later.

Note

Acrobat 7.0 uses PDF 1.6, while Acrobat 8.0, Acrobat 9.0, and Acrobat X use PDF 1.7.

Review general PDF options

The General section of the Save Adobe PDF dialog box controls basic file characteristics, such as file size, editability, and viewing behavior.

Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities: Embeds complete Illustrator data in the PDF, so you can reopen and edit the file in Illustrator without losing data. This increases the file size because Illustrator stores both PDF and native Illustrator data. Select it when archiving working files or when you need full editability, and deselect it to reduce file size for final delivery.

Embed Page Thumbnails: Generates a preview thumbnail for each page, moderately increasing file size. Acrobat 5.0 and later generate thumbnails dynamically, so leave this deselected unless your workflow requires embedded thumbnails for older or specialized viewers.

Optimize For Fast Web View: Restructures the PDF so that a web server can deliver it page by page, allowing the first page to display before the rest of the file finishes downloading. Select this option for PDFs you distribute online, since it also reduces overall file size.

View PDF After Saving: Opens the new PDF in your default PDF viewer as soon as saving finishes. Select it to check the output right away, and deselect it when batch-processing multiple files.

Create Acrobat Layers from Top-Level Layers: Saves the top-level layers in Illustrator as Acrobat layers, allowing Acrobat users to show or hide layers to create multiple versions of a document from a single file, such as a multilingual publication. Sublayers aren't converted, so organize the elements you want users to control into top-level layers before you export. This option is only available when Compatibility is set to Acrobat 6.0 (PDF 1.5), Acrobat 7.0 (PDF 1.6), or Acrobat 8.0 (PDF 1.7).
