Save files in the background

Last updated on Oct 25, 2026

Learn how to continue working while Adobe Illustrator saves large .ai files in the background.

Background save lets Illustrator save .ai files on a separate thread, so you can continue editing while the save operation runs. This feature is enabled by default and works with File > Save and File > Save As commands.

Background save is available only for Illustrator (.ai) files. When you save to other formats, such as .svg, .eps, and .pdf, Illustrator uses the standard save process and waits until the save is complete.

Monitor save progress

You can check the status of one or more background save operations at any time.

Select the Progress icon in the menu bar.

View the save progress for the active file.

If multiple files are being saved, expand the progress panel to view the status of each file.

Small files may finish saving before the progress indicator appears.

Cancel an active save

If needed, you can stop an active background save.

Select the Progress icon in the menu bar.

Locate the file progress panel.

Select Cancel (x) next to the file.

Caution

Canceling a save operation discards any unsaved changes from that save. Save the file again to preserve your latest edits

Turn off background save

Select Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or Illustrator > Settings > File Handling (macOS).

Deselect Save in Background.

Select OK.

With Background save turned off, Illustrator completes each save before you can continue working. Reactivate Save in Background to restore the default behavior.

Tip

If you continue editing while a background save is in progress, save the file again after the first save finishes to ensure your latest changes are saved.
