Change the default font in Illustrator

Last updated on Oct 24, 2026

Learn how to change the default font for new documents in Adobe Illustrator desktop by editing a document profile template.

Changing the default font helps streamline your workflow by automatically applying your preferred typeface to new documents. This update affects only documents created after you save the modified template. Existing documents retain their current font settings. Additional font management guidance is available in the fonts FAQ.

Open the document profile template

Select File > Open.

Navigate to the New Document Profiles folder:
On macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator //New Document Profiles.

On Windows: C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator Settings\x64\New Document Profiles.

Replace:
<version> with your installed Illustrator version number.

<locale> with your language code, such as en_US.

Open the document template you want to modify, such as Print.ai or Web.ai.

Change the default font

Select Window > Type > Character Styles.

Select Normal Character Style in the Character Styles panel.

Select Basic Character Formats in the Character Style Options dialog.

Select required font from the Font Family.

Update other character settings as needed.

Select OK.

Select File > Save As and save the file with the same name in the original location.

Restart Adobe Illustrator.

New documents created from the updated document profile use the selected font by default. Repeat these steps for other document profiles if you want different default fonts for other document types.
