Change printer resolution and screen frequency

Last updated on Oct 25, 2026

Learn how to select optimal dpi/lpi combinations in Adobe Illustrator to achieve the best balance between print quality and printing speed.

Illustrator prints fastest and best using your printer's default resolution and screen frequency. You might want to change these settings if a long, curved path won't print due to a limit-check error, if printing is slow, or if gradients and meshes show banding when printed.

Select File > Print.

From the Printer menu, select Adobe PostScript® File, or Adobe PDF. This setting requires a PostScript device.

Select Output in the Print dialog box.

From the Printer Resolution menu, select a screen frequency (lpi) and printer resolution (dpi) combination.

Set any other print options as needed.

Select Print.

Printer resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi), while screen frequency is measured in lines per inch (lpi). Higher screen frequencies produce finer detail, but the appropriate setting depends on your printer’s resolution and the printing press. Using a screen frequency that is too high for a low-resolution printer can reduce image quality.

Note

Some imagesetters and laser printers use screening technologies other than halftoning. For nonhalftone printers, check your printer documentation or service provider for the recommended resolution.
