Parameter
Learn about the rasterization parameters that control how Illustrator converts vector artwork into raster images.
Use these rasterization parameters when applying raster effects, troubleshooting print quality, or preparing artwork for export. These options determine how Illustrator converts vector graphics to pixel-based images.
Access these settings from:
- Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings for document-level raster effects.
- Object > Rasterize for individual objects.

Values |
Behavior |
|
Color Model |
RGB, CMYK, Grayscale, Bitmap |
Determines the color model used during rasterization. RGB and CMYK options depend on your document's color mode. Bitmap creates a 1-bit image. Depending on the Background setting, the image is black and white or black and transparent. |
|
Resolution |
Screen (72 ppi), Medium (150 ppi), High (300 ppi), Use Document Raster Effects Resolution, Custom (1-2400 ppi) |
Controls pixel density in the rasterized image. Higher values produce sharper results but increase file size and processing time. Document raster effects use the resolution specified in Document Raster Effects Settings. |
|
Background |
White, Transparent |
Converts transparent areas to either white pixels or maintains transparency. Transparent preserves transparency by creating an alpha channel for all image types except 1-bit images. This option provides better anti-aliasing than Create Clipping Mask. |
|
Anti-alias |
None, Art Optimized, Type Optimized |
Reduces jagged edges in rasterized images—Art Optimized suits general artwork; Type Optimized suits text. None preserves hard edges and is useful for fine lines and small text. When setting document-level options, deselect to preserve crispness. |
|
Create Clipping Mask |
Selected, Deselected |
Creates a mask that makes the background appear transparent. Leave this option disabled when Background is set to Transparent. |
|
Add Around Object |
0-1000 pixels |
Adds padding around the rasterized image. To create a photo border effect:

Resolution Independent Effects
Resolution Independent Effects (RIE) adjusts resolution-dependent parameters automatically when the Document Raster Effects Settings resolution changes.
When you change the Document Raster Effects Settings resolution:
- Illustrator recalculates resolution-dependent parameters.
- Updated values appear the next time you open the effect.
- Other effect settings remain unchanged.
Example:
In the Halftone Pattern effect, only the size changes when the document resolution changes from 300 ppi to 150 ppi. Contrast and Pattern Type remain unchanged.
If raster effects appear jagged or lose detail in print, increase Document Raster Effects Settings to 300 ppi or higher.
