Distort and transform effects in Illustrator

Last updated on Oct 25, 2026

Learn to reshape your vector objects in Adobe Illustrator without permanently changing their paths.

These live effects let you experiment freely—you can always modify or remove them later through the Appearance panel.

Use these effects when you want to add perspective, create organic shapes, or add visual interest to your artwork while keeping your original paths intact.

To apply these effects: Select Effect > Distort & Transform or Effect > Convert to Shape.

Convert to Shape effects

Effect

Behavior

Key Parameters

Rectangle

Converts the shape of vector objects to a rectangle

Absolute or relative width and height dimensions

Rounded Rectangle

Converts the shape of vector objects to a rounded rectangle

Absolute or relative width and height dimensions; corner radius value to control curvature

Ellipse

Converts the shape of vector objects to an ellipse

Absolute or relative width and height dimensions

Distort & Transform effects

Free Distort

Changes the shape of a vector object by repositioning any of the four corner points independently. This effect provides manual control over each corner, making it useful for creating perspective or custom distortions.

Key parameters:

  • Four independent corner point handles
  • Freeform positioning without constraints

Pucker & Bloat

Pulls anchor points and curve segments relative to the object's center point.

Key parameters:

  • Pucker (negative values): Pulls anchor points outward while curving segments inward, for a pinched appearance
  • Bloat (positive values): Pulls anchor points inward while curving segments outward, creating a bulging appearance
  • Intensity percentage from -200% to 200%

Roughen

Creates irregular, jagged edges along smooth paths.

Key parameters:

  • Size: Maximum length for segment paths (absolute or relative)
  • Detail: Density of jagged edges per inch
  • Points: Corner (sharp edges) or Smooth (rounded edges)

Transform

Apply multiple transformations at once—scale, move, rotate, or reflect your object. You can also create multiple copies with the transformation applied.

Key parameters:

  • Scale (horizontal and vertical percentages)
  • Move (horizontal and vertical distances)
  • Rotate (angle in degrees)
  • Reflect (X or Y axis)
  • Number of copies to create

Tweak

Randomly curves and distorts path segments inward and outward, creating organic irregularities.

Key parameters:

  • Horizontal distortion (absolute or relative percentage)
  • Vertical distortion (absolute or relative percentage)
  • Modify anchor points: Controls whether anchor points move
  • In Control Points: Affects control handles leading into anchor points
  • Out Control Points: Affects control handles leading out of anchor points

Twist

Rotates an object toward the centre with increasing intensity, creating a spiral distortion.

Key parameters:

  • Angle: Rotation amount in degrees
  • Positive values twist clockwise
  • Negative values twist counterclockwise

Zig Zag

Transforms smooth path segments into uniform ridge patterns.

Key parameters:

  • Size: Length between peaks and valleys (absolute or relative)
  • Ridges per segment: Number of peaks along each path segment
  • Points: Corner (jagged edges) or Smooth (wavy edges)

Warp effects

The Warp effect distorts or deforms vector objects, paths, text, meshes, blends, and bitmap images using predefined warp shapes.

Available warp styles:

  • Arc, Arc Lower, Arc Upper
  • Arch
  • Bulge
  • Shell Lower, Shell Upper
  • Flag
  • Wave
  • Fish
  • Rise
  • Fisheye
  • Inflate
  • Squeeze
  • Twist

Key parameters:

  • Style: Choose from predefined warp shapes
  • Bend: Controls the intensity of the primary warp (–100% to 100%)
  • Horizontal or Vertical: Determines the axis of distortion
  • Distortion: Horizontal and vertical values for additional deformation (–100% to 100%)
