Last updated on Oct 30, 2026

Learn how to place Photoshop cloud documents in Adobe Illustrator and manage linked or embedded artwork in your Illustrator document.

Place Photoshop cloud documents (.psdc files) from Creative Cloud in Illustrator. Select Linked to maintain a connection to the source file, or deselect it to embed the artwork in your Illustrator document.

Photoshop cloud documents saved to Creative Cloud sync across your devices and can be placed in Illustrator without downloading them first. The workflow supports documents created in Photoshop on desktop or iPad.

Place a Photoshop cloud document

In Illustrator, open an existing document or create a new one.

Select File > Place.

Select Open Cloud Document.

Select the Photoshop cloud document (.psdc) you want to place.

Select the Linked checkbox to maintain a connection to the source file, or deselect Linked to embed the artwork.

Select Place.

Select the artboard to place the document at its original size, or drag on the artboard to set custom dimensions.

If you embedded the document, select Convert Layers to Objects to preserve editable layers and text, or select Flatten Layers to a Single Image to import the artwork as one raster image in the Photoshop Import Options dialog box.

For a linked cloud document, Illustrator maintains a connection to the source file. If automatic link updates are turned on in Illustrator preferences, changes to the original Photoshop file update automatically. Otherwise, update the link from the Links panel.

Manage linked cloud documents

Use the Links panel to check the status of linked cloud documents, update a link, connect it to another source file, or embed the artwork.

Select Window > Links to open the Links panel.

Select a linked cloud document in the panel to view its status and information.

To connect the artwork to a different source file, select Relink from the Links panel menu.

To refresh the placed artwork after the source file changes, select Update Link.

To embed the artwork in the Illustrator document, select Embed Images from the Links panel menu.

The Links panel uses a cloud icon to identify cloud-based files. A warning icon indicates that the source file has changed and the link needs updating.

Note

If you use Illustrator on desktop and iPad with the same Creative Cloud account, Adobe Fresco cloud documents also appear in the cloud document browser and can be placed with the same workflow.
