Preview artwork as outlines

Last updated on Oct 27, 2026

View artwork as vector paths without fills, strokes, or effects to improve performance when working with complex illustrations.

Outline mode displays only vector paths, making it easier to edit complex artwork, locate overlapping objects, and improve redraw performance.

View the document in Outline mode

Select View > Outline, or press Ctrl + E (Windows) or Command + E (macOS).

To return to Preview mode, repeat the command.

View a layer in Outline mode

Select Window > Layers.

Ctrl-click (Windows) or Command-click (macOS) the eye icon next to the layer name.

Repeat the shortcut to restore Preview mode.

The eye icon changes appearance to indicate the current view mode: a hollow center

indicates that Outline view is enabled, while a filled center

indicates that Preview view is enabled.

View unselected layers as outlines

In the Layers panel, select the layer you want to keep in Preview mode.

Alt + Ctrl-click (Windows) or Option + Command-click (macOS) the eye icon for the selected layer.

To restore all layers to Preview mode, select Preview All Layers from the Layers panel menu.

Display linked file contents in Outline mode

By default, linked files appear as outlined boxes with an X in Outline mode. You can configure Adobe Illustrator to display the actual contents of linked files for easier reference.

Select File > Document Setup.

In the Document Setup dialog, enable Show Images In Outline Mode.

Select OK to apply the setting.

Linked images normally appear as placeholder boxes in Outline mode. Enable this option to display the image contents instead.

GPU Outline mode

On displays at least 2000 pixels wide or high, Illustrator automatically uses GPU acceleration to render in Outline mode when GPU Performance is enabled. This provides smoother path rendering and faster redraw performance.

If GPU Performance is disabled, Illustrator uses CPU rendering instead.
