Apply and modify effects

Last updated on Oct 24, 2026

Learn how to use effects in Adobe Illustrator using the Appearance panel and Effect menu to enhance artwork and customize effect settings.

Effects in Adobe Illustrator let you add visual enhancements to objects, groups, or layers without permanently altering the underlying artwork. You can apply effects through the Effect menu or the Appearance panel, then edit or remove them at any time.

Effects appear in the Appearance panel after application, where you can modify their settings or remove them. The effects in the top half of the Effect menu are vector effects, which apply only to vector objects or to the fill or stroke of bitmap objects. The effects in the bottom half are raster effects, that apply to both vector and bitmap objects. You can learn about effects to understand detailed information on the effect type.

Apply an effect

Select the object or group (or target a layer in the Layers panel).
If you want to apply an effect to a specific attribute of an object, such as its fill or stroke, select the object and then select the attribute in the Appearance panel.

Do one of the following:

  • Select a command from the Effect menu.
  • Select Add New Effect in the Appearance panel, and select an effect.

If a dialog box appears, adjust the settings as needed and then select OK.

After applying an effect, it appears as an active item in the Appearance panel, where you can modify its parameters or remove it completely.

Modify or delete an effect

Select the object, group, or target layer in the Layers panel that contains the effect you want to change.

Select the effect name to open its dialog box and adjust the settings, then select OK.

Select the effect listing and select Delete to delete the effect.

Note

Effects do not work on linked bitmap objects. If you apply an effect to a linked bitmap, Illustrator applies it to an embedded copy instead. To apply effects to the original bitmap, embed it in your document first.

The rasterization options explain how to adjust resolution settings for raster effects. You can explore graphic styles for reusable effect combinations.
