Fill the work canvas
Last updated on
2 December 2025
Learn how to fill the canvas with a color or a custom background in Adobe Photoshop.
The work canvas surrounds the image area and can be filled with a color that contrasts well with the image. This adjustment enhances contrast, reduces visual strain, and makes editing more comfortable.
Before you begin
Make sure your workspace is visible and isn't in full-screen mode.
Select a color from the context menu:
- Default
- Black
- Dark Gray
- Medium Gray
- Light Gray
- Custom
When you select Custom, the last custom chosen color is applied.
To change the custom color, choose Select Custom color, and then select a color from the Color Picker.
Select OK to apply the color.
