Learn how to restore missing actions after updating Adobe Photoshop or installing it on a new computer in Adobe Photoshop.

Actions may be missing when you update Photoshop or install Photoshop on a new computer. Use one of the following solutions to migrate actions between Photoshop versions or computers.

Save and load actions

Save actions as a .atn file on the source installation and then load the file into the target installation.

Save actions as a .atn file

Start Photoshop and select Window > Actions.

From the Actions panel menu, select New Set.

Enter a name for the new action set.

Select the new action set and drag the actions you want to include into the set.

Select the action set, and then select Save Actions from the Actions panel menu.

Photoshop creates a .atn file in the following default location:

  1. Windows: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop <version>\Presets\Actions
  2. macOS: Applications\Adobe Photoshop <version>\Presets\Actions

Load actions

Import the saved .atn file on another computer or in a different version of Photoshop.

Launch Photoshop and select Window > Actions.

From the Actions panel menu, select Load Actions.

Select the .atn file you want to import.

Manually migrate actions and presets

Follow these steps to migrate actions to a newly installed version of Photoshop.

Navigate to the appropriate settings folder on the source installation:

  • Windows: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop <version>\Adobe Photoshop <source_version> Settings
  • macOS: Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop <source_version> Settings

Copy the Actions Palette.psp file.

Paste the copied file into the appropriate settings folder on the target installation:

  • Windows: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop <version>\Adobe Photoshop <target_version> Settings
  • macOS: Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop <target_version> Settings
Note

In folder paths or names, replace text between angle brackets (<>) with the required details. Replace <user name> with your account name and <version> with the Photoshop version you're using.
