Convert images to black and white

Use the Make image B/W quick action to desaturate color photos instantly.

Learn how to remove color from photographs to create dramatic monochrome images that emphasize subject, texture, and contrast without the distraction of color information.

This approach works best when you need fast results for social media graphics, artistic compositions, or preliminary design mock-ups. Requires Photoshop 2023 or later.

Apply the black and white conversion

Open the Discover panel using one of the following:

  • Select Help menu > Photoshop Help or
  • Select the Search icon or
  • Press Ctrl + F (Windows) or Command + F (macOS)

Choose an image layer to apply B/W conversion.

Locate Make image B/W under Quick Actions. If the Quick Actions section is not visible in the Discover panel, use the search bar to locate the action directly.

Select Make image B/W action. Result: The B/W conversion applies to the current layer.

Select an option from the Discover panel to:

  • Revert: Remove the conversion in current layer
  • Apply: Reapply the conversion to the current layer

To apply the conversion to different layers, choose the layer and select Refresh.

Tip

Use Filter > Filter Gallery to adjust contrast and tonal settings using filter options.
