Blend channels with Apply Image and Calculations

Learn how to create creative composites by blending channel pixels with Apply Image and Calculations in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.
Apply Image works with single and composite channels, while Calculations operates exclusively on single channels.
Blend channels with Apply Image
Select Image > Apply Image.
In the dialog box, choose your source image, layer, and channel. Select Merged for Layer to use all layers in the source.
Select Preview to view results.
Choose a blending mode from the Blending menu.
Enter an Opacity value between 1 and 100 to control effect strength.
Select Preserve Transparency to restrict blending to opaque areas only.
To blend with a mask, select Mask, then choose the image, layer, and channel that contain your mask. Select Invert to reverse which areas are protected and which are affected by the blending.
Note
When color modes differ between images, apply individual channels rather than composite channels.
Blend channels with Calculations
Open your source image or images with matching pixel dimensions.
Select Image > Calculations.
Select Preview to view results as you adjust settings.
Choose the first source image, layer, and channel. Select Merged for Layer to use all layers.
Optionally select Invert to use the channel's negative values or Gray to work with grayscale values.
Choose the second source image, layer, and channel. Optionally select Invert to use the channel's negative.
Choose a blending mode from the Blending menu.
Enter an Opacity value to specify effect strength.
To blend with a mask, select Mask, choose the image and layer containing the mask, then select the channel or transparency boundary. Select Invert for masks to reverse which areas are protected during blending.
Note
When color modes differ between images, you can apply single channels only, not composite channels.
For Result, specify whether to create a new document, add a new channel, or select the active image.
