Create point type and paragraph type

Last updated on Oct 10, 2026

Learn how to use the Type tool in Adobe Photoshop on desktop to add flexible point text or bounded paragraph text to your designs.

Whether you're creating a headline, button label, caption, or multi-paragraph layout, Photoshop gives you precise control over how text appears and behaves. Choosing between point type and paragraph type helps you work more efficiently and format text correctly for your design.

  • Point type is ideal for short lines of text such as headlines, navigation labels, or buttons. Each line remains independent unless you manually add a line break.
  • Paragraph type creates a text container that automatically wraps text within a bounding box, making it best for longer content such as descriptions, captions, or body copy.

Both options create editable type layers with vector-based edges, so your text stays sharp at any size.

Add point type

Select the Horizontal Type tool or the Vertical Type tool from the toolbar.

Click anywhere in the image to set an insertion point.

Configure type options in the Options bar, Character panel, or Paragraph panel as needed.

Enter your text. Press Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS) to start a new line.

Press Ctrl + Enter (Windows) or Command + Return (macOS) to commit the text.

Add paragraph type

Select the Horizontal Type tool or the Vertical Type tool from the toolbar.

Drag diagonally in the image to create a bounding box for the text.

Configure type options in the Options bar, Character panel, or Paragraph panel as needed.

Enter your text. Press Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS) to start a new paragraph.

Press Ctrl + Enter (Windows) or Command + Return (macOS) to commit the text.

Resize, transform, or convert type

With the Type tool active, select the type layer in the Layers panel and then click inside the text.

To resize the bounding box for paragraph type, drag any handle. Shift-drag a corner handle to maintain proportions.

To rotate the bounding box, position the pointer outside the border until it becomes a curved arrow, then drag. Shift-drag to constrain rotation to 15° increments.

To skew the bounding box, hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and drag a middle handle.

To convert between point type and paragraph type, select the type layer, then Type > Convert To Point Text or Type > Convert To Paragraph Text.
