Adjust line and character spacing

Learn how to adjust line and character spacing in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Use line and character spacing to refine visual balance in text used for layouts, headlines, or logos.

The Character panel settings let you adjust line and character spacing with options to set leading, apply kerning, adjust tracking, shift baseline, and toggle fractional widths to customize text.

Set leading

Open Character panel settings.

Select the characters you want to adjust. By default, the setting applies to new text you create.

Enter a leading value in the Character panel or select from the menu. Higher values increase space between lines.

Auto leading calculates line spacing at 120% of the type size.

Change the default auto-leading percentage

Select Justification from the Paragraph panel.

Enter a new percentage value for Auto Leading.

Select OK to apply the changes.

Apply kerning

Open Character panel settings.

To use a font’s built‑in kerning information for selected characters, select Metrics for the Kerning option in the Character panel.

To use automatic kerning, select Optical for Kerning option in the Character panel.

To adjust kerning manually, choose specific insertion point between characters, and enter the desired value for the Kerning option in the Character panel. The negative values decrease space; positive values increase space.

You can also press Alt + left arrow (Windows) or Option + left arrow (macOS) to decrease kerning or use right arrow to increase kerning between two characters. Optical kerning works best when fonts have minimal built-in kerning data or when mixing different typefaces or sizes within the same line.

Adjust tracking

Open Character panel settings.

Select the range of characters or the entire type layer you want to adjust.

In the Character panel, enter a value in the Tracking field. Negative values decrease spacing, while positive values increase spacing.

Tracking and manual kerning work together cumulatively. You can manually kern specific letter pairs, then apply tracking to increase or decrease the entire selection without losing your custom kerning adjustments.

Shift baseline

Open Character panel settings.

Select the characters you want to shift.

Enter a value in the Baseline Shift field. Positive values move characters above and negative values move them below the baseline.

Baseline shift is particularly useful for manually positioning superscripts, subscripts, or adjusting picture fonts and symbols to align with surrounding text.

Toggle fractional widths

Open Character panel settings.

Select the type layer or text you want to adjust.

Select Fractional Widths to enable sub-pixel spacing or System Layout to snap character spacing to whole pixels.

Fractional character widths provide optimal spacing and readability for most designs. Use System Layout only for small text (less than 20 points) displayed on screen, where fractional spacing might cause characters to run together or appear too loose.
