Capture a Sample Process or Spindump on macOS

Last updated on Oct 16, 2026

Use Activity Monitor to generate diagnostic reports when Photoshop stops responding to troubleshoot freeze issues.

Diagnostic reports help Adobe Support and engineering teams identify the cause of application freezes and develop solutions.

A freeze (also called a hang, spinning cursor, or rainbow wheel) occurs when Photoshop stops responding while waiting for the operating system or another process. This is different from a crash, where the application closes unexpectedly. Use Sample Process for general freezes or Spindump for applications terminated with Force Quit. For crash issues, see Submitting crash reports.

Sample Process creates a diagnostic report over 3 seconds while observing a selected process. Spindump generates a report for unresponsive applications that you terminated using Force Quit. Adobe Support or engineering may request either diagnostic type to troubleshoot your specific issue.

  • macOS computer with administrative access
  • Activity Monitor (located in Applications > Utilities)
  • Admin username and password (may be required)

Generate a diagnostic report in Activity Monitor

Launch Adobe Photoshop from your Applications folder.

Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities.

In Activity Monitor, select CPU from the toolbar if not already selected.

Locate and select Photoshop from the Process Name list.

Switch back to Photoshop and repeat the actions that cause the freeze.

When Photoshop freezes, return to Activity Monitor while the freeze is occurring.

Select the gear icon in the Activity Monitor toolbar and choose Sample Process.

Enter your admin username and password if prompted.

When the diagnostic window appears, select Save in the upper-right corner.

Choose your desktop as the save location and select Save.

Tip

If you have many processes running, use the search field in the upper-right corner of Activity Monitor to quickly find Photoshop.

After saving the diagnostic file, you can share it with Adobe Support through the Adobe Community or when working directly with a support representative.

Note

Sample Process and Spindump diagnostics contain minimal personal information—only the file path to the application being sampled. For more details about Activity Monitor diagnostics, see Apple's documentation for Run system diagnostics in Activity Monitor on Mac.
