Specify columns for images

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how to configure column width and gutter settings to size images for page-layout programs in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Column specifications in Adobe Photoshop let you size images to match the column layout of your target publication, ensuring precise alignment when importing into page-layout applications like Adobe InDesign.

Use column-based sizing when preparing images for multi-column page layouts. This workflow helps match your image dimensions to a publication's column grid before import. Once you configure column width and gutter spacing in preferences, you can apply these measurements when creating new documents or resizing existing images.

Column settings define both the width of each column and the gutter (the vertical space between columns). After configuring your preferences, Photoshop uses these measurements whenever you specify dimensions in columns rather than pixels, inches, or other units. Configure column and gutter preferences.

Configure column and gutter preferences

Select Edit > Preferences > Units & Rulers (Windows) or Photoshop > Settings > Units & Rulers (macOS).

In the Column Size section, enter a value for Width to define the width of a single column.

Enter a value for Gutter to specify the spacing between columns.

Select OK to save your preferences.

After setting your column preferences, you can use columns as a measurement unit when creating or resizing images. This ensures your images match the exact column layout of your page design.

Size images using column measurements

Select File > New.

For new documents, select Columns from the unit dropdown next to the Width field and enter the number of columns needed.

For existing images, select Image > Image Size or Image > Canvas Size, then Columns as the unit and enter the desired number of columns.

Select OK or Create to apply the column-based dimensions.

When resizing existing images using Image Size, ensure the Resample option is selected to adjust pixel dimensions. When using Canvas Size, the pixel content remains unchanged while the canvas expands or contracts. Your image now matches the specified number of columns and will align precisely with your page-layout grid when imported.
