Apply patterns to template images

Pattern Fill layers let you showcase custom patterns on product mockups, apparel templates, and packaging designs while keeping all edits fully adjustable.

This workflow applies patterns to template images using Pattern Fill layers and clipping masks. Pattern Fill layers keep your pattern editable—you can change the pattern, scale, or angle at any time without affecting the original template. This approach works with any template that includes designated layers for customization, such as apparel mockups, product packaging, or surface designs.

Before applying patterns to templates, ensure you have patterns available in your Patterns panel and a template file with clearly labeled layers for customization.

• A template document with target layers for pattern application
• Photoshop 2021 or later for full Pattern Fill layer support

Add a Pattern Fill layer

The pattern now fills the entire canvas on a new layer above your target layer. To restrict the pattern to only the target layer's visible areas, create a clipping mask.

Create a clipping mask

The pattern now appears only where the layer beneath contains pixels. You can also create a clipping mask by selecting the Pattern Fill layer and choosing Layer > Create Clipping Mask, or by right-clicking the Pattern Fill layer and selecting Create Clipping Mask.

To modify your pattern after applying it, double-click the Pattern Fill layer thumbnail to reopen the Pattern Fill dialog. From here, you can select a different pattern, adjust the scale, or change the angle. You can also experiment with blend modes in the Layers panel—Multiply, Overlay, and Soft Light, for example—changing how the pattern interacts with the layer beneath.

For templates with complex layer structures, such as apparel mockups, look for layer groups labeled "graphic," "design," or "custom." Hide any placeholder layers within these groups before adding your Pattern Fill layer to avoid visual conflicts.
