Apply Charcoal filter to images

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how to transform photos into bold charcoal sketches using quick actions with adjustable stroke and tonal effects in Photoshop.

The Charcoal filter creates dramatic sketches from photographs, simulating charcoal drawing techniques. The filter works best on high-contrast images with clear subject definition. After applying the effect, you can refine stroke characteristics and tonal balance through the Filter Gallery.

Apply the Charcoal filter

Select the Search icon in the upper-right corner of the Photoshop interface, or press Ctrl + F (Windows) or Command + F (macOS).

Select Quick Actions under the Browse section in the Discover panel.

Scroll to the Charcoal filter and select Apply.

To apply the effect to a different layer, select that layer in the Layers panel and then select Refresh in the Discover panel.

Note

Your image now displays a charcoal sketch effect.

Select Revert in the Discover panel to undo all quick action steps at once.

Select Browse more quick actions to explore additional one-click effects.
