Create vector masks with the Pen and Shape tools to control layer visibility with scalable paths. Use vector masks to create precise edges for graphics, logos, and selections.
Vector masks provide scalable edges at any resolution for graphics, logos, and precise selections.
Vector masks use paths rather than pixels to define layer visibility, creating clean edges that scale without loss of quality. Use vector masks when you need precise geometric shapes or smooth curves. For organic selections, such as hair or soft edges, use layer masks instead.
Create vector masks that reveal or hide entire layers, build masks from shapes, or edit existing mask paths. Adjust, disable, or convert vector masks to layer masks as needed.
Create a vector mask to show or hide a layer
To reveal the entire layer, select Layer > Vector Mask > Reveal All.
To hide the entire layer, select Layer > Vector Mask > Hide All.
After creating a reveal-all or hide-all mask, edit the mask path to show or hide specific areas of the layer.
Create a vector mask from a shape
In the Layers panel, select the layer you want to mask.
Draw a path using the Pen tool or create a shape with a shape tool. When using a shape tool, select the Paths icon in the options bar.
Select the Vector Mask button in the Properties panel, or select Layer > Vector Mask > Current Path.
Tip
Combine multiple paths with the Path Operations options in the options bar to create more complex masks before applying the vector mask.
Edit a vector mask path
In the Layers panel, select the layer containing the vector mask.
In the Properties panel, select the Vector Mask button to activate the mask for editing.
Use the Pen tool, Direct Selection tool, or a shape tool to modify the mask shape.
Adjust vector mask density and feathering
In the Layers panel, select the layer containing the vector mask.
In the Properties panel, select the Vector Mask button.
Drag the Density slider to control mask opacity, or drag the Feathering slider to soften mask edges.

Disable or enable a vector mask
In the Layers panel, select the layer containing the vector mask.
Choose one of these methods: Select the Disable/Enable Mask button in the Properties panel, Shift-click the vector mask thumbnail in the Layers panel, or select Layer > Vector Mask > Disable or Enable.
When disabled, a red X appears over the mask thumbnail in the Layers panel, and the layer content appears without masking.
Remove a vector mask
In the Layers panel, select the layer containing the vector mask.
In the Properties panel, select the Delete Mask button, or select Layer > Vector Mask > Delete.
Convert a vector mask to a layer mask
In the Layers panel, select the layer containing the vector mask.
Select Layer > Rasterize > Vector Mask.

Converting a vector mask to a layer mask is irreversible.
