Rasterize type layers

Last updated on Oct 10, 2026

Learn how to convert editable text to pixels using Layer menu commands to apply filters and painting tools in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Rasterizing converts a type layer into a regular pixel-based layer, making the text permanently uneditable. Use this procedure when you need to apply filters, painting tools, or other effects that require pixel-based content. Photoshop automatically prompts you to rasterize when you attempt to use incompatible commands on type layers. For non-destructive workflows that preserve editability, consider converting type layers to Smart Objects before applying filters or transformations.

Once you rasterize a type layer, you cannot edit the text content, change fonts, or adjust character formatting. The layer becomes a standard image layer containing pixels shaped like your original text.

Convert type to pixels

Select the type layer in the Layers panel.

Select Layer > Rasterize > Type.

The type layer converts to a regular layer with a standard thumbnail preview. The text now exists as pixels and responds to all Photoshop tools and commands like any other rasterized content. Duplicate your type layer before rasterizing so you can return to the editable version if needed. For more flexibility when applying filters to type, use Smart Objects, which preserve editability while allowing non-destructive effects, and edit text to modify text or character formatting.
