Organize layers in the Layers panel

Last updated on Sep 28, 2026

Rename, delete, export, and color-code layers to maintain a tidy workspace.

Keeping your Layers panel organized makes complex projects more manageable and helps you locate elements quickly.

These procedures help you maintain a clean Layers panel by giving layers descriptive names, removing unnecessary content, exporting layers for external use, and applying visual color labels. Use these techniques when working with documents that contain multiple layers or when preparing files for collaboration.

Rename layers or groups

Descriptive names make it easier to identify layer content briefly.

Select the layer name or group name in the Layers panel.

Enter a new name that describes the layer content.

Press Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS).

Note

You can select the layer or group and choose Layer > Rename Layer or Layer > Rename Group to give a new name.

Delete layers or groups

Removing unused layers reduces file size and eliminates clutter in the Layers panel.

Select one or more layers or groups in the Layers panel.

Select the Delete icon at the bottom of the panel or press the Delete key.

Select Yes in the confirmation dialog to complete the deletion.

Tip

To delete without seeing a confirmation dialog, drag the layer or group to the Delete icon, or Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (macOS) the Delete icon.

To quickly remove all blank layers in your document, select File > Scripts > Delete All Empty Layers. To delete hidden layers, choose Layer > Delete > Hidden Layers. To delete linked layers, select a linked layer, choose Layer > Select Linked Layers, and then delete the selection.

Export layers to separate files

Save each layer as an individual file when you need to create assets for web projects, animations, or client deliverables.

Select File > Export > Layers to Files.

Select the destination folder and enter a file name prefix.

Select Visible Layers Only if you want to export only layers that are currently visible in the Layers panel.

Choose a file format from the File Type dropdown and configure any format-specific options.

Select Run to export each layer as a separate file.

Photoshop names each exported file using your prefix plus the original layer name. Select Include ICC Profile to embed the color profile for color-managed workflows.

Assign colors to layers

Color coding helps you visually group related layers and locate them quickly in the Layers panel.

Right-click the layer or group in the Layers panel.

Select a color from the context menu.

The color appears as a bar next to the layer or group thumbnail in the Layers panel. Assigning the same color to related layers makes it easier to identify them. Learn how to Organize layers with layer groups, Link and unlink layers and Work with the Layers panel when working with complex documents.
