Determine scan resolution for print output

Last updated on Oct 10, 2026

Learn how to estimate final output size in Adobe Photoshop by calculating optimal scanning settings with screen frequency ratios or by creating test files before production.

Setting the correct scan resolution helps you balance image quality and file size for print output.

Use these techniques to determine scan resolution for commercial printing and other high-quality output devices.

Calculate scan resolution from screen frequency

Determine the screen frequency for your output device. Check your printer documentation or consult your print service provider.

Note

For laser printers and imagesetters, image resolution is typically twice the screen frequency. For inkjet printers, use the manufacturer's recommended resolution.

Determine the dimensions of the original image and the final printed image.

Calculate the scaling ratio and multiply it by the output resolution to determine the scan resolution.

Some color separation workflows use different ratios of image resolution to screen frequency. Verify the recommended ratio with your print service provider.

After scanning the image, you can adjust dimensions and resolution in Photoshop. Change print dimensions and resolution to adjust your image size and resolution while maintaining image quality.

Preview file size before scanning

Select File > New to open the New Document dialog box.

Enter the final width and height for the image.

Set the resolution to 1.5 to 2 times the printing screen frequency.

Select the color mode from the Color Mode menu. The dialog box displays the predicted file size.

Note the predicted file size displayed in the dialog box.

After scanning and importing the image into Photoshop, select Image > Image Size.

Deselect Resample and enter your final width and height values.

If you're unsure of the final output requirements, scan at the scanner's maximum optical resolution. Capturing the highest level of detail gives you more flexibility to resize the image later.
