Add brush dynamics

Last updated on Oct 15, 2026

Find parameter definitions for Shape, Color, and Transfer dynamics in the Brush Settings panel.

Consult this reference when configuring brush dynamics in the Brush Settings panel or troubleshooting unexpected stroke behavior. Each dynamics category offers jitter controls and precision settings that determine how brush characteristics vary during a stroke.

Jitter values specify randomness as a percentage: 0% produces no variation, while 100% produces maximum randomness. The Control pop-up menu determines how variation occurs—options include Off (no control), Fade (gradual change over specified steps), or pen-based controls (Pen Pressure, Pen Tilt, Stylus Wheel, Rotation) that respond to input from pressure-sensitive tablets.

Note

Pen-based controls require a pressure-sensitive digitizing tablet such as Wacom. A warning icon appears if you select a pen control without a compatible tablet or pen feature installed.

Shape Dynamics

Shape Dynamics parameters control the physical dimensions and orientation of brush marks throughout a stroke.

Size Jitter and Control

Specifies how brush mark size varies in a stroke.

  • Jitter value: Maximum percentage of size randomness
  • Control options:Off: No control over size varianceFade: Size transitions from initial diameter to minimum diameter in the specified number of stepsPen Pressure, Pen Tilt, Stylus Wheel: Size varies based on pen input between initial and minimum diameter

Minimum Diameter

Specifies the minimum percentage by which brush marks can scale when Size Jitter or Size Control is enabled. Enter a value as a percentage of the brush tip diameter.

Tilt Scale

Specifies the scale factor applied to brush height prior to rotation when Size Control is set to Pen Tilt. Enter a value as a percentage of the brush diameter.

Angle Jitter and Control

Specifies how the angle of brush marks varies in a stroke.

  • Jitter value: Maximum percentage of jittering as a percentage of 360 degrees
  • Control options:Off: No control over angle varianceFade: Angle transitions between 0 and 360 degrees in the specified number of stepsPen Pressure, Pen Tilt, Stylus Wheel, Rotation: Angle varies between 0 and 360 degrees based on pen inputInitial Direction: Angle based on the initial direction of the brush strokeDirection: Angle based on the current direction of the brush stroke

Roundness Jitter and Control

Specifies how the roundness of brush marks varies in a stroke.

  • Jitter value: Percentage indicating the ratio between the brush's short and long axes
  • Control options:Off: No control over roundness varianceFade: Roundness transitions between 100% and Minimum Roundness value in the specified number of stepsPen Pressure, Pen Tilt, Stylus Wheel, Rotation: Roundness varies between 100% and Minimum Roundness value based on pen input

Minimum Roundness

Specifies the minimum roundness for brush marks when Roundness Jitter or Roundness Control is enabled. Enter a percentage indicating the ratio between the brush's short and long axes.

Brush Projection

When enabled, tilt and rotation changes alter the tip shape as you paint with a stylus.

Color Dynamics

Color Dynamics parameters determine how paint color changes over the course of a stroke.

Apply Per Tip

When enabled, color changes for each distinct tip stamp in a stroke. When disabled, dynamic changes occur once at the beginning of each stroke, allowing color variation between strokes rather than within individual strokes.

Foreground/Background Jitter and Control

Specifies how paint varies between the foreground and background colors.

  • Jitter value: Percentage by which color can vary
  • Control options:Off: No control over color varianceFade: Color transitions between foreground and background color in the specified number of stepsPen Pressure, Pen Tilt, Stylus Wheel, Rotation: Color varies between foreground and background based on pen input

Hue Jitter

Specifies a percentage by which the hue of paint can vary in a stroke. Lower values maintain close proximity to the foreground color hue; higher values increase the difference between hues.

Saturation Jitter

Specifies a percentage by which saturation can vary in a stroke. Lower values maintain close proximity to the foreground color saturation; higher values increase the difference between saturation levels.

Brightness Jitter

Specifies a percentage by which brightness can vary in a stroke. Lower values maintain close proximity to the foreground color brightness; higher values increase the difference between brightness levels.

Purity

Increases or decreases the saturation of the color. Enter a percentage between –100 and 100. At –100%, the color is fully desaturated; at 100%, the color is fully saturated.

Transfer

Transfer parameters determine how opacity and flow change over the course of a stroke.

Opacity Jitter and Control

Specifies how opacity varies in a brush stroke, up to but not exceeding the opacity value specified in the options bar.

  • Jitter value: Percentage by which opacity can vary
  • Control options:Off: No control over opacity varianceFade: Opacity transitions from the options bar value to 0 in the specified number of stepsPen Pressure, Pen Tilt, Stylus Wheel: Opacity varies based on pen input

Flow Jitter and Control

Specifies how flow varies in a brush stroke, up to but not exceeding the flow value specified in the options bar.

  • Jitter value: Percentage by which flow can vary
  • Control options:Off: No control over flow varianceFade: Flow transitions from the options bar value to 0 in the specified number of stepsPen Pressure, Pen Tilt, Stylus Wheel: Flow varies based on pen input
