Save images in JPEG format

Last updated on Oct 10, 2026

Learn how to create JPEG files with adjustable quality and compression settings in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Use the Save As command to save CMYK, RGB, and grayscale images into the JPEG (*.jpg) format.  This format reduces file size by compressing image data.

JPEG only supports RGB, CMYK, and grayscale color modes at 8-bit depth. Photoshop automatically converts 16-bit documents to 8-bit when you save. For workflows requiring multiple export formats or automated batch processing, consider using File > Export > Export As instead.

Configure JPEG settings and save

The JPEG option provides controls for compression quality and format settings. Higher quality settings preserve more detail but create larger files, while lower quality settings reduce file size but may reduce image quality.

Browse and open a document in the RGB, CMYK, or grayscale color mode.

Note

JPEG files do not preserve layers. Flatten the image or save a flattened copy before saving as JPEG if you no longer need editable layers.

Select File > Save As, then JPEG from the Format dropdown.

Enter a filename, select a save location, then Save.

If your image contains transparent areas, choose a color from the Matte menu to simulate the background appearance.

Set image quality using the Quality slider (0–12) or enter a value directly in the text box.

Under Format Options, select from the given options:

  • Baseline (Standard): Select for broad compatibility.
  • Baseline Optimized: Select for improved compression and color.
  • Progressive: Select to display the image in stages as it downloads.

Select OK to save your JPEG file.
