Fine-tune specific color ranges in your images using CMYK sliders that target individual color families without affecting others.
The Selective Color tool gives you precise control over color adjustments by modifying process colors in specific families—reds, yellows, greens, cyans, blues, magentas, whites, neutrals, and blacks. For example, you can reduce cyan in green areas while preserving cyan in blues.
This adjustment works on RGB images using CMYK sliders, making it valuable for both print and digital workflows. For broader color shifts across your entire image, use Hue/Saturation adjustments instead.
Create a Selective Color adjustment layer
Ensure you have the composite channel is selected in the Channels panel on Photoshop 2023 or later for the best results.
Open the Adjustments panel and select the Selective Color icon, or select Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color and then select OK.
Note
Select Image > Adjustments > Selective Color to apply the adjustment directly to your image layer.
Adjust colors and values
In the Properties panel, select a color family from the Colors menu—Reds, Yellows, Greens, Cyans, Blues, Magentas, Whites, Neutrals, or Blacks.
Choose either the Relative or the Absolute method:
- Relative: Changes color by a percentage of the current value. Adding 10% to a pixel with 50% magenta increases it by 5% (to 55% total).
- Absolute: Changes color by the exact amount specified. Adding 10% to a pixel with 50% magenta increases it to 60% total, creating stronger shifts in lighter tones.
Drag the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, or Black sliders to adjust that process color in the selected family. Adjustments affect pixels based on how closely they match the selected color family. A pixel with 50% magenta falls midway between white and pure magenta, so it receives a proportional mix of adjustments defined for both colors.
Save your settings as presets from the Properties panel menu to reuse them across multiple images.
