Remove JPEG artifacts from images

Apply the JPEG artifacts removal quick action to sharpen compressed images and eliminate compression flaws.

The JPEG artifacts removal quick action uses neural filtering to restore sharpness and eliminate these compression imperfections with a single click.

Use this quick action when working with images that show visible compression artifacts. Requires Photoshop 2023 or later.

Access and apply the quick action

Open the Discover panel using one of the following:

  • Select Help menu > Photoshop Help or
  • Select the Search icon or
  • Press Ctrl + F (Windows) or Command + F (macOS)

Choose the desired layer to apply the quick action.

Locate JPEG artifacts removal filter under Quick Actions. Select Download to install, if using this filter for the first time.

Select JPEG artifacts removal filter. Result: Removes JPEG artifacts from the current layer.

Select an option from the Discover panel to:

  • Revert: Retain the JPEG artifacts in current layer
  • Apply: Reapply the action to the current layer

To apply the action to different layers, choose a layer and select Refresh.

After applying the filter, Photoshop creates a new layer with the corrected image while preserving your original. The neural filter automatically analyzes compression patterns and restores image quality.

Adjust filter strength

Choose a layer and select Filter menu > Neural Filters.

Locate and enable JPEG Artifacts Removal under RESTORATION.

Choose a Strength setting from the drop-down: Low, Medium, or High.

Select OK to apply the settings.

Tip

Higher strength settings provide more aggressive artifact removal but may soften fine details. Start with Medium and adjust based on your image quality needs.
