Color management policy options

Last updated on Oct 7, 2026

Find settings that control how Photoshop handles embedded profiles and color data from external sources.

Consult these settings when configuring color workflows or troubleshooting color inconsistencies between documents with different embedded profiles.

Access color management policies in the Color Settings dialog box (Edit > Color Settings). Each color mode—RGB, CMYK, and Gray—can be assigned its own policy to control how Photoshop interprets color data when opening files or importing content from external sources.

Policy settings

RGB, CMYK, and Gray

Each color mode uses one of the following policies to determine how Photoshop handles color profiles:

Policy

Behavior

Preserve Embedded Profiles

Always preserves embedded color profiles when opening files—recommended for most workflows because it provides consistent color management. If preserving CMYK numbers is essential, use Off instead.

Convert To Working Space

Converts colors to your current working space profile when opening files and importing images. Forces all colors to use a single profile—your current working space profile.

Off

Ignores embedded color profiles when opening files and importing images. Does not assign the working space profile to new documents. Discards any color metadata provided by the original document creator.

Note

The Gray policy is available only in Photoshop.

Alert options

Enable these checkboxes to receive notifications when profile conflicts occur. Alerts enable case-by-case decisions rather than always applying the default policy. All alert options are turned off by default.

Alert Option

When It Appears

Available Actions

Profile Mismatches: Ask When Opening

You open a document tagged with a profile other than the current working space.

Use the embedded profile, convert it to a working space, or discard it.

Profile Mismatches: Ask When Pasting

Colors are imported through pasting or dragging and dropping between documents with different profiles.

Convert pasted content to match the document color space or preserve original color numbers.

Missing Profiles: Ask When Opening

You open an untagged document.

Leave untagged, assign the current working space profile, or assign a different profile.

Common scenarios

Opening files from applications without color management

Documents created in applications that don't support color management won't be tagged with a profile. The Missing Profiles alert (if enabled) lets you assign an appropriate profile when opening these files.

Opening documents with different working spaces

Documents created with different color management settings, or scanned and tagged with a scanner profile, may contain embedded profiles that differ from your current working space. The Profile Mismatches alert (if enabled) lets you decide whether to use the document's profile or convert it to your working space.

Copying and pasting between documents

When pasting or dragging colors between documents with different color profiles, the Profile Mismatches: Ask When Pasting alert (if enabled) lets you choose whether to convert colors to maintain appearance or preserve color values.
