Apply path blur effects in the Blur Gallery

Last updated on Oct 9, 2026

Learn how to define directional blur paths with adjustable speed, taper, and strobe effects for realistic motion in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Path Blur creates motion blur along custom paths you draw on your image, giving you precise control over the direction and quality of the motion effects. It's ideal for adding motion to static subjects or enhancing existing movement.

Unlike uniform blur filters, Path Blur lets you define the exact motion trajectory and adjust blur intensity at specific points along the path. This procedure applies to single or multiple paths within the same image.

Use Path Blur when you want to simulate motion in a specific direction or to add dynamic energy to action shots. The effect automatically composites multiple path blurs if you add more than one.

Create the path blur effect

Select Filter > Blur Gallery > Path Blur.

In the Blur Tools panel under Path Blur, select either Basic Blur for continuous motion or Rear Sync Flash to simulate a flash fired at the end of an exposure.

Select on the image to place the starting point of your blur path.

Select again to create the endpoint and define the blur direction or select multiple times along the path to create curves.

Drag the blur amount wheel control near an endpoint to adjust blur intensity at that location.

In the Blur Tools panel, adjust the Speed slider to control the overall blur amount across all paths in the image.

Adjust the Taper slider to make the blur trail off gradually at the ends of the path.

If you want more directed motion blur rather than centered blur, deselect Centered Blur.

Add strobe effects

In the Blur Effects panel, select the Motion Blur Effects tab.

Set Strobe Flashes to specify the number of virtual flash exposures along the motion path.

Adjust Strobe Strength to control the balance between continuous blur and distinct flash exposures.

Select OK in the options bar to apply the Path Blur effect.

Set Strobe Strength to 0% for continuous blur only, or 100% for distinct flash exposures with no blur between them. Values between 0% and 100% blend both effects.

Refine blur paths and shapes

After creating your initial path, you can modify both the path trajectory and the blur shape guides that control how blur spreads perpendicular to the path direction.

Path controls:

  • Select an endpoint to select it and adjust its blur amount
  • Drag endpoints to reposition them and change the path length
  • Press Option-select (macOS) or Alt-select (Windows) a curve point to convert it to a corner point for sharp direction changes
  • Press Command-drag (macOS) or Ctrl-drag (Windows) to move an entire path
  • Press Option + Command-drag (macOS) or Alt + Ctrl-drag (Windows) to duplicate a path
  • Press Delete with an endpoint selected to remove the path

Blur shape controls:

  • Double-select an endpoint or select Edit Blur Shapes in the Blur Tools panel to view red blur shape guides
  • Drag the red guides to control how blur extends perpendicular to the path
  • Press Command-select (macOS) or Ctrl-select (Windows) an endpoint to collapse its blur shape guide to zero
  • Shift-drag a blur shape guide to move both guides for that path symmetrically

Press H temporarily to hide all on-image controls for an unobstructed preview.
