Select backgrounds in images

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Use Quick Actions in the Discover panel to automatically isolate backgrounds with one click.

Isolating the background from your subject enables precise edits like color adjustments, replacements, or removal without affecting the foreground. This automated selection works best with images that have clear subject-background separation.

The selection appears as marching ants and can be refined manually or converted to a layer mask for non-destructive editing.

Note

Requires Adobe Photoshop version 23.0.1 or later.

Before starting, ensure your image is open in Adobe Photoshop, and the layer you want to work with is selected in the Layers panel.

Select the background automatically

Select the search icon in the upper-right corner of the workspace, or press Cmd (macOS) / Ctrl (Windows) + F to open the Discover panel. Alternatively, select Help > Photoshop Help.

In the Discover panel, select Browse > Quick Actions.

Select Select background from the list of quick actions.

Select Apply to create a selection of the background in your image.

After the background is selected, you can apply adjustments, delete it, or convert the selection to a mask by selecting the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Apply to different layers or revert changes

To apply the selection to a different layer, select the target layer in the Layers panel.

In the Discover panel, select Refresh to rerun the quick action on the newly selected layer.

To undo all changes from the quick action, select Revert in the Discover panel.

Tip

If the automatic selection isn't precise, refine it using Select > Select and Mask to adjust edges, add or subtract from the selection, or smooth the selection boundary.

For more complex background editing tasks, explore related quick actions, such as Remove Background or Blur Background, in the same Quick Actions section of the Discover panel.
