Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Find all brush and lighting parameters for the Oil Paint filter and their effects on painterly transformations.

Consult this reference when applying the Oil Paint filter (Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint) to understand how each setting affects your image's painterly appearance, or when fine-tuning results to match a specific artistic style.

All settings use a 0–10 scale unless otherwise noted.

Brush settings

Stylization

0–10

Controls stroke appearance. Lower values (0) create a daubed, impressionistic look. Higher values (10) produce smooth, blended strokes.

Cleanliness

0–10

Adjusts stroke length and continuity. At 0, strokes are shortest and choppiest. At 10, strokes are longest and most fluid.

Scale

0–10

Determines paint thickness and relief. Lower values (0) apply thin coats. Higher values (10) create thick impasto effects with pronounced texture reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh's style.

Bristle Detail

0–10

Sets visibility of brush hair indentations. At 0, strokes appear soft with minimal texture. At 10, strong grooves simulate coarse bristle marks.

Lighting settings

Angle

0–360°

Controls light source direction relative to the painted surface. Adjust this when compositing oil-painted elements into scenes with established lighting.

Shine

0–10

Determines light intensity and surface reflectivity. Lower values reduce highlights. Higher values increase brightness and specular reflection from the paint surface.
