Improve painting and cloning performance

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn about the brush settings that affect painting and cloning performance in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Some brush settings require more processing and can slow down painting and cloning. Adjust smoothing, spacing, brush complexity, and display options to improve responsiveness.

Smoothing

Set Smoothing to 0% in the options bar or Brush Settings panel for maximum painting responsiveness. The default is 10%. Higher values can make painting less responsive.

Adjust stroke behavior with stroke smoothing.

Spacing

In the Brush Settings panel, increase Spacing as much as possible while maintaining the desired stroke appearance. Lower spacing values require more processing. The default is 25% for a standard round brush.

Customize brush characteristics in the Brush Settings panel.

Brush complexity

Use a standard round brush with only Shape Dynamics for better painting performance. Complex brush shapes and additional brush settings can reduce responsiveness. If painting becomes slow, reset the Brush tool settings and apply only the settings required for your work.

Rulers and Extras

Hide these display elements while painting or retouching to improve responsiveness:

  • Rulers: Select View > Rulers, or press Ctrl + R (Windows) or Command + R (macOS).
  • Extras: Select View > Extras, or press Ctrl + H (Windows) or Command + H (macOS). Extras include guides, grids, and slices.
