PDF does not open automatically after saving on a Mac

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how to fix PDFs that don't open automatically after saving in Adobe Photoshop on Mac by turning off Save in Background.

When you save a document as a PDF on a Mac and select View PDF After Saving, the PDF should open automatically in your default PDF viewer. If this doesn't happen, the issue can occur when Photoshop saves the file in the background.

Background saving sends the command to open the PDF before Photoshop finishes creating the file, causing the automatic viewing feature to fail.

Fix the automatic PDF view issue

Go to Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling.

Deselect Save In Background from the File Saving Options.

Select OK.

Save your file as a PDF with View PDF After Saving selected.

The PDF opens automatically in your default PDF viewer after the save completes. With background saving disabled, Photoshop waits until the file is created before sending the open command to your PDF application.

Disabling background saving causes Photoshop to pause briefly while saving files. For most PDF exports, this delay is minimal.

If you frequently save large PDFs and want to keep Save In Background selected, open the PDF manually from its save location after it is created. Use the save location from the Save As dialog to find your exported PDF.
