Desaturate image backgrounds to black and white

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how to use the Make B/W background quick action to remove color from backgrounds while keeping your subject vibrant.

This quick action identifies the subject in your image and converts the background to black and white. Use this technique to draw attention to your subject by removing color distractions from the surrounding area. For converting entire images to black and white, use a Black & White adjustment layer instead.

The Make B/W background quick action works best with images that have clear separation between the subject and background.

Before you begin

Ensure you have:

  • Photoshop version 23.0.1 or later
  • An image with a clearly defined subject
  • The image layer must be unlocked

Apply the Make B/W background quick action

Open the Discover panel by selecting the search icon in the upper-right corner of the workspace, or press Ctrl + F (Windows) or Command + F (macOS). You can also select Help > Photoshop Help from the menu bar.

Select Browse > Quick Actions in the Discover panel.

Scroll to Make B/W background and select it.

Select Apply to convert the background to black and white while preserving the subject's original colors.

Refine or revert the effect

  • Select the layer in the Layers panel to apply the effect to a different layer.
  • Select Refresh in the Discover panel to reapply the quick action.
  • Select Revert in the Discover panel to undo all changes.
  • Adjust the layer mask manually to refine the boundary between the color subject and the black-and-white background.
