Calibrate and profile your monitor

Last updated on Oct 6, 2026

Use calibration utilities to adjust display settings and create accurate color profiles for consistent output.

Monitor calibration and profiling ensure accurate color reproduction across your workflow, from initial edits to final output.

Calibration adjusts your monitor to meet a predefined standard, such as the graphics arts white point of 5000 K (Kelvin). Profiling creates a description of how your monitor currently reproduces color. Together, they ensure that what you see on screen matches your intended output. Without an accurate monitor profile, you may make unnecessary corrections based on misleading color representation. This calibration process is essential before working with color-critical projects and should be your first step in establishing color management.

Monitor calibration involves adjusting several display properties to achieve consistent, predictable color. Modern LCD and OLED displays differ from older CRT technology, but the fundamental calibration parameters remain important for accurate color work.

Understanding calibration settings

Your calibration utility adjusts brightness, contrast, gamma (midtone curve), and white point (color temperature) to establish accurate color display.

  • Monitor warmed up for at least 30 minutes
  • Display set to millions of colors (24-bit or higher)
  • Neutral gray desktop background without busy patterns or bright colors
  • Stable lighting conditions in your workspace
Note

Colorful backgrounds and patterns surrounding your document interfere with accurate color perception. Set your desktop to neutral gray before calibrating.

Calibrate your monitor using built-in utilities

Ensure your monitor has been powered on for at least 30 minutes to reach stable operating temperature.

Verify your monitor displays millions of colors (24-bit) or higher in your system display settings.

Change your desktop background to a neutral gray and remove any colorful patterns or images.

On Windows, install and launch monitor calibration utility through your display settings or manufacturer software.

On macOS, open System Settings, select Displays, navigate to the Color tab, and select Calibrate.

Follow the on-screen instructions to adjust brightness, contrast, gamma, and white point settings.

Save the completed calibration profile when prompted.

The calibration utility automatically assigns your new profile as the default monitor profile. For manual profile assignment, consult your operating system help documentation.

Tip

For color-critical work, use third-party calibration hardware and software. These devices measure displayed colors more accurately than visual assessment alone.

Recalibrate regularly

Recalibrate your monitor monthly to maintain accuracy as display components age.

After creating a new profile, restart Photoshop and other Adobe applications to ensure they use the updated monitor profile.
