Remove small spots with the Spot Healing Brush
Paint over blemishes and imperfections to blend them automatically with surrounding pixels.
The Spot Healing Brush removes small unwanted elements like dust spots, blemishes, or minor imperfections by automatically sampling surrounding pixels and blending them into the corrected area. This tool works best on relatively uniform backgrounds where the area around the spot provides good texture and color information for blending.
Use the Spot Healing Brush for quick fixes to small imperfections in your photos. This approach works well when the surrounding area provides suitable texture and color for automatic blending. For larger objects, irregular areas, or situations requiring more control over the source pixels, consider using the Patch tool or Generative Fill.
Before starting your retouching work, zoom in on the area you want to fix so you can see the imperfection clearly and work with precision.
Remove spots from your image
In the Options bar at the top, adjust Size to make the brush slightly larger than the spot you want to remove.
Set Hardness based on the edge quality you need—higher values create sharper edges, while lower values soften the transition.
Select Content-Aware from the Type menu in the Options bar to let Adobe Photoshop automatically analyze nearby pixels and generate a natural-looking fill.
If working with multiple layers, select Sample All Layers in the Options bar to use pixel data from all visible layers, or leave it deselected to sample only from the active layer.
Select or drag over the imperfection to automatically blend it with surrounding pixels.
The corrected area appears immediately as Adobe Photoshop analyzes the surrounding texture, lighting, and color to generate a seamless repair. For multiple small spots across your image, you can work efficiently by adjusting your brush size with the bracket keys—press [ to decrease size or ] to increase size—and clicking on each imperfection in sequence.
Work on a separate empty layer above your image layer for non-destructive editing. Create a new layer, select Sample All Layers in the Options bar, and apply your spot healing edits to the empty layer while preserving your original image.
The Spot Healing Brush excels at removing small distractions that pull attention away from your subject. Common applications include removing dust spots from scanned photos, clearing skin blemishes in portraits, eliminating sensor dust marks from digital photos, and cleaning up small unwanted objects in product photography. The tool adapts to various image types and works particularly well when the area surrounding the imperfection provides consistent texture and color information.
For areas that require more manual control over the source pixels, the Healing Brush tool offers similar blending capabilities but lets you define exactly which pixels to sample. For larger areas or complex backgrounds, explore the Patch tool for area-based repairs or Generative Fill for AI-powered object removal and background reconstruction.
