Print color separations

Last updated on Oct 10, 2026

Learn how to generate individual color plates for CMYK images for commercial offset printing in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Color separations split your image into individual plates for each CMYK color channel and spot color channel, which your print service provider uses to create printing plates for commercial offset printing.

Your document must be in CMYK Color, Multichannel, or Duotone mode. Confirm requirements for file format, color handling, and screen angles with your print service provider before starting.

Note

Separations printed on non-PostScript printers may differ from those printed on PostScript printers.

If your image is a duotone, select Image > Mode > Multichannel.

Select File > Save As.

Select Photoshop DCS 2.0 from the Format dropdown menu.

In the DCS 2.0 Format dialog box, deselect Include Halftone Screen and Include Transfer Function.

Select Save.

Import the saved file into your page layout application.

Tip

Place PSD files containing spot colors directly into Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator without converting to DCS 2.0 format. DCS 2.0 is primarily for QuarkXPress and legacy applications.
