Lock layers

Last updated on Oct 6, 2026

Learn how to apply full or partial lock settings to prevent unintended changes to layer content and position in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Locking layers protects your work from accidental edits as your document becomes more complex. You can lock an entire layer or lock only specific properties, such as transparency, pixels, or position, while editing other aspects.

When you lock a layer, a lock icon appears next to its name in the Layers panel. A solid lock icon means the layer is fully locked. A hollow lock icon means only some properties are locked.

Lock all properties of a layer or group

In the Layers panel, select a layer or layer group.

Right-click and select Lock Layers or Lock Group.

Partially lock a layer

Select a layer in the Layers panel.

Select one or more of the following lock options at the top of the panel:

  • Lock transparent pixels: Prevents editing of transparent pixels on the selected layer.
  • Lock image pixels: Prevents changes to the layer's image content.
  • Lock position: Prevents the layer from being moved.
  • Prevent auto-nesting into and out of Artboards and Frames: Prevents the layer from being automatically nested into an artboard or group when moved.
  • Lock all attributes: Locks the layer to prevent all edits and movement.

Select OK.

Note

For type and shape layers, Lock Transparency and Lock Image are selected by default to preserve their vector properties and cannot be deselected.

Lock multiple layers or groups

Select multiple layers or a layer group in the Layers panel.

Select Layer > Lock Layers and then one of the given options in the Lock Options dialog.

  • Transparency: Locks transparent pixels so you can edit only the existing image content.
  • Image: Locks the layer's pixels to prevent any edits to the image content.
  • Position: Prevents the layer from being moved on the canvas.
  • Prevent auto-nest: Prevents the layer from being automatically nested into an artboard or group when moved.
  • All: Applies all available lock options to the selected layer.

Select OK.
