Create a new image in Photoshop

Last updated on Oct 6, 2026

Select a preset category and customize dimensions, resolution, color mode, and background options to get started on your project.

When you create a new document, Photoshop opens the New Document dialog with preset templates organized by use—Photo, Print, Art & Illustration, Web, Mobile, and Film & Video. Each preset includes dimensions and resolution settings appropriate for that output type.

For opening existing files or importing assets, see Create, open, and import images.

Before you begin
  • Adobe Photoshop 2017 release or later
  • Understanding of your project's output requirements (screen, print, or web)
  • Familiarity with resolution and color mode requirements for your intended use

Create a new image

Select File > New, or press Ctrl + N (Windows) or Command + N (macOS).

Select a category tab at the top of the New Document dialog: Photo, Print, Art & Illustration, Web, Mobile, or Film & Video.

Select a preset that matches your output size.

In the Preset Details pane on the right, enter a name for your document.

Adjust Width and Height values if needed. Select the appropriate unit of measurement from the dropdown.

Select an Orientation: Landscape or Portrait.

Set the Resolution appropriate for your output—typically 72 pixels/inch for screen or web, 300 pixels/inch for print.

Select a Color Mode: RGB Color for screen and web projects, CMYK Color for print.

Select a Background Contents option: White, Background Color, Transparent, or Other to choose a custom color using the Color Picker.

Select the Artboards checkbox to work with multiple canvases in a single document. This is an optional step.

Select Create.

Configure advanced settings

Select Advanced Options in the Preset Details pane.

Select a Color Profile, or choose Don't Color Manage This Document.

Set Pixel Aspect Ratio to Square for standard images, or select a non-square option for video content.

Select Create.

Note

Save custom settings as a preset by selecting the save icon in the Preset Details pane. Your preset appears in the Saved tab for quick access later.

If you've copied a selection before creating a new document, Photoshop automatically matches the dimensions and resolution to your clipboard content.
