Prepare images for page-layout programs

Learn how to select file formats and set export settings for placing images in layout applications in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Export images with the correct format and settings to ensure proper display and printing in page layout applications.

InDesign can place PSD files directly and automatically preserve transparent areas, layers, and effects. Most other page-layout programs require TIFF or EPS format with specific export settings. If your image includes areas that must remain transparent, create a clipping path before exporting.

The format you select depends on both your page-layout application and your final output method. TIFF is compatible with non-PostScript printers, while EPS is designed for PostScript printing workflows.

Export your image

If your image contains transparent areas that should remain transparent in the page-layout program, create a clipping path around the opaque areas before exporting.

Select File > Save As.

Choose a location for your file and enter a filename.

From the Format menu, select TIFF for non-PostScript printers or Photoshop EPS for PostScript printers.

Select Save to open the format options dialog.

Set the format options and select OK.

After saving, place the image in your page layout application.

Set TIFF export settings

In the TIFF Options dialog, set Image Compression to None.

Leave the remaining options at their default settings.

Select OK.

Set EPS export settings

In the EPS Options dialog, set Preview to TIFF (8 bits/pixel) on Windows or Macintosh (8 bits/pixel) on macOS.

Set Encoding to ASCII85.

Select OK.

Tip

For images that will be printed using process colors, convert your file to CMYK mode before exporting. You can also use File > Export As for additional format options and export controls.
