Print a hard proof

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how to preview how images will look on commercial presses by printing physical proofs with your desktop printer.

Previewing images uses your saved custom proof setup to simulate specific press conditions on your desktop printer. Your hard proof accuracy depends on the quality of the printer profile, monitor calibration, and how closely your desktop printer matches the simulated output device. Inkjet printers with a resolution of 600 dpi or higher produce reliable hard proofs.

  • Saved custom proof setup configured through View > Proof Setup > Custom
  • Printer profile installed for your desktop printer and paper combination
  • Calibrated monitor for accurate soft-proof comparison
  • Commercial press specifications (ink type, paper stock, and dot gain values)

Photoshop applies your soft-proof settings during printing to simulate how the target press will render your image. The printer profile you select controls how Photoshop translates these simulated colors to your desktop printer.

Configure proof settings for printing

Select View > Proof Setup and choose the output conditions you want to simulate.

If you need custom proof settings, select Custom, configure your settings to match your target press, and save them with a descriptive name.

Verify that the proof preset name appears at the top of your document window.

Select File > Print.

Set color management options

Expand the Color Management section on the right side of the Print dialog.

For Color Handling, select Photoshop Manages Colors.

For Printer Profile, select the profile that matches your desktop printer and paper combination.

From the menu above Proof Setup, select Hard Proofing.

Verify that the Proofing Profile entry matches the proof setup you configured.

Select Simulate Paper Color to preview how your image will appear on the target press paper stock.

Select Simulate Black Ink to preview how dark tones will reproduce on the simulated device.

Note

Simulate Paper Color and Simulate Black Ink options depend on your selected printer profile.

Disable printer color management

Select Print Settings to access your printer driver options.

Locate the color management section in your printer driver (commonly found under Color Management, Color, Advanced, or Quality tabs).

Turn off all color management, color correction, or ICM settings.

Tip

Different printer manufacturers organize these settings differently. Look for options labeled None, Off, or No Color Adjustment. For specific locations in your printer model, search "[printer model] disable color management" in your printer manufacturer's support documentation.

Select Print to output your hard proof.

Compare your hard proof against the soft proof on your calibrated monitor.

Note

Monitors emit light while prints reflect it, creating some natural variation. Significant differences indicate profile or calibration issues that need correction.
