Select subject in images

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Automatically identify and select prominent subjects with a single click using AI-powered technology.

The Select subject quick action uses Adobe Sensei machine learning to automatically detect and select the most prominent subject in your image—a person, animal, vehicle, or other focal object. This creates an active selection that you can immediately use for masking, adjustments, or compositing workflows.

Quick actions apply to the currently active layer. For multi-layer documents, select the layer with your desired subject before applying the action.

Apply the Select Subject quick action

Open the Discover panel:

  • Select the search icon in the upper-right corner of the workspace
  • Press Ctrl + F (Windows) or Command + F (macOS)
  • Select Help > Photoshop Help.

Navigate to Browse > Quick Actions in the Discover panel.

Select Select subject.

Select Apply.

Photoshop creates an active selection around your primary subject. You can refine it using Select and Mask, add it to a layer mask, or use it for adjustments and effects.

Work with the selection results

To apply the action to a different layer, select that layer in the Layers panel and then Refresh in the Discover panel. This reruns the quick action on the newly selected layer.

If the results don't match your expectations, select Revert to undo the selection. For more control over specific objects, use the Object Selection tool.

Tip

For images with multiple prominent subjects, the Select subject typically identifies the largest or most central subject. Use the Object Selection tool to target specific subjects individually.

To explore additional automated workflows, select Browse more quick actions in the Discover panel. Related quick actions include Select Background, Select sky, and Remove Background.
