Configure cursor preferences for painting tools

Last updated on Oct 7, 2026

Learn how to adjust cursor appearance and brush outline display from standard icons to precise crosshairs or size-matched brush tips in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Cursor preferences control how painting tool cursors display when working with tools like the Brush, Pencil, Eraser, or Clone Stamp. Switch between standard tool icons, precise crosshairs, or brush tip outlines that match your tool size.

Configure painting cursor preferences

Select Edit > Preferences > Cursors (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > Cursors (macOS).

In the Painting Cursors area, select your preferred cursor style:

  • Standard: Displays standard tool icon.
  • Precise: Shows a precise crosshair.
  • Normal Brush Tip: Shows cursor outline for areas with 50% or more opacity.
  • Full Size Brush Tip: Shows the entire affected area, including lighter opacity.

If you selected a Brush Tip option, choose your preferred outline boldness from Thin, Normal, Bold, or Extra Bold. Brush outline boldness options require Photoshop version 24.1 or later.

Select additional display options as needed:

  • Show Crosshair in Brush Tip: Adds a crosshair to your brush tip cursor.
  • Show Only Crosshair While Painting: Displays only a crosshair during active painting.

In the Other Cursors area, select Standard or Precise for non-painting tools.

Select OK.

Tip

Press Caps Lock to quickly toggle between your selected cursor and a precise crosshair while working with the Brush or Pencil tool.
